They just walk out on the landing board and launch out into the sky!
The Beehive Cozy Cover does not close off the entrance when properly installed. The sewn in 'drip edge' protects rain or snow from dripping on the landing board and leaves ample space for the bees to come and go.
The Cozy Cover is designed to clear the entrance of your hive to allow the bees to come and go from the entrance.
Yes, the Cozy Cover will work with a side entrance top bar hive. Depending on your hive you may need to add a piece of wood or similar to prop the Cozy away from the entrance so that the bees can still come and go from the entrance
Yes, the Cozy Cover will work with longer horizontal hives whether long top bar hives, Layden hives or horizontal Langstroth hives.
The important thing is to cover the broodnest area of your hive. Normally the broodnest is at the front of the hive and the Cozy fits on the front and main body of the hive. It is ok if the Cozy doesn't extend to the back of the hive where there are just honey stores.
It is important to move the falseback or divider board of your hive behind the last fully drawn out comb going into fall. This helps keep reduce down the hive area that the bees need to keep warm. You could place a bag of wool behind the fasleback to help insulate the hive. We don't do this unless your hive only built out about half way and they area a small group and really need some extra help.
Yes, the Cozy Cover fits Langstroth and Warre' hives. The Cozy is intended to cover 1 deep, 1 super and a quilt or dry box. This overwintering system is recommended by top entomologist, Thomas Seeley. The important thing is to cover the area of the broodnest over winter. If you go into winter with more stacked boxes make sure the Cozy Cover is covering the broodnest area of the hive.
Yes, place the Roof of your hive over the Cozy Cover.
If you have a flat lid on your hive put the Cozy Cover over the flat lid then the Roof on top of the Cozy. We like to strap down the Roof to secure it from winter winds. Make sure to not crunch down the Cozy Cover too much as the loft in the wool is what helps to keep it's best insulative value.
Most beehives are made from 1" thick wood. Bees have lived in well-insulated, thick natural cavities like trees for thousands of years.
When insulating a hive we want to simulate what the bees experience in nature when living inside a hollow of a tree. There is typically at least a thickness of 8 to 10 inches of wood surrounding the bee's nest.
We have created an insulating solution that is as close as possible to what the bees experience in nature when living inside a hollow of a tree. The wool layers provide the same amount of insulation value as a tree cavity.
